Skipping a Run

Out of the 38 runs that have come and gone on my training schedule since January 8th I have not missed a single one… until yesterday. I have had 2 flops thus far, a six mile pace run that I crashed and burned on and cut my cool down short by 3/4 a mile, I did finish the 4 miles at pace and the warm up though! and a 12 mile run that I drank my face off the night before and finished only 9.6 miles of. All in all I would say neither are really that bad because I at least did them. Last night I had a 3 mile run on the books, only 3 miles!

The snow day threw off my schedule, when I went up to my apt gym the treadmills were full and by the time I got home at 8:30pm I was sleepy and opted to go to bed. Horrible! I will say that on 95% of the mon / wed / sat rest days I lift, circuit train, or go hiking AND I have actually ran a few times. On top of that I play soccer once a week and this week I have soccer and rugby. So I REALLY shouldn’t feel bad about skipping the run. But I do. It’s 3 miles, even if I wanted to just slow poke it out it would still take less than 30 minutes. I’m pretty sad with myself right now and will be channeling that annoying feeling into my run today (6 Mi, 1 mile warm, 3×1600 in 7:54 w/ 800 jogs, 1 mile cool). I am also thinking about running 3 miles on Saturday or adding the 3 miles onto my Sunday run and making that be 16 miles. It is my last long run for the Rock n Roll, the race is a week from Saturday!

This post is short and sweet and a total pity party so that is all.

Questions

Q: What do you do when you skip a scheduled run / work out? Do you feel all pissy as I clearly am right now? Do you make it up? Tell me how to not feel so cranky right now…

  1. Don’t be so hard on yourself! You can totally get those three miles in on another day this week if you really want to stick to your mileage. That’s the beauty of those short mileage days, you can pop them in almost anywhere.

    • Thank you : ) I think I may just let them go away, I’m realizing that the training I’m on has literally zero taper (has me doing a speed work out the 3 days before the race…) so the 3 miles can suck it. plus a soccer game and rugby practice is plenty this week as a make up

  2. Don’t worry about missing those silly 3 miles. 3 MILES, its nothing! My runner friends have always told me (which their coaches told them), that if you miss a run just move on and don’t worry about it. And don’t try and add those miles to another run, just go about your schedule as if you haven’t missed it. When I was training for a half marathon in September I missed an 11 mile run because I was travelling – now that is something to be stressed about but I still did really well and was totally fine!

  3. I’m the exact same way if I change up my routine at all. For example, I normally wake up at 6AM every M/W/F and today I woke up at 6:45. I was pissed for no reason LOL. It’s all good though you will certainly make up for it and missing one day isn’t bad at all, just don’t make it a habit! Which you obviously won’t 🙂

  4. Try not to beat yourself up or overcompensate for missing a run. Honestly, it isn’t worth it at all and you will be more likely to get injured. 13 miles the week before the race is a LOT of running to be doing. I definitely wouldn’t add on any more. It’s not a big deal if you miss a workout here or there. I definitely get upset too so I know where you’re coming from but I also know that I’m trying to teach myself that life goes on. Your race will still go well. And you will still have a great half!

    • Yea yea yeaaaa, fine. I would be fricken livid if I ended up hurt or just beat at the race because I added those miles on. So I supposed the best thing to do is drop it. Like I mentioned in another comment, I had a soccer game tuesday and I have rugby practice today on top of my running schedule, thats an extra 3 hours of running so I think it’s safe to say I will make up the 3 miles in that time period.

  5. Don’t worry, it’s only 3 miles 🙂

  6. Oh man don’t beat yourself up about it! i get mad at myself for a few hours when I decide to skip a run/workout but get over it quickly lol!

  7. No no no no nooo!! Do not make this run up, skipping this 3miler will do NOTHING to effect your training, in fact it could BENEFIT you by giving you a rest. There is nothing wrong with having an extra rest day thrown in and the fact that is was only 3miles is a good thing!! It’s basically like you didn’t miss a run at all!

Your training schedule doesn’t take into account the soccer you do. That’s so much extra running that you could make up for more than just a 3mile run skip. Go about the rest of your training and just enjoy the runs!! There is nothing wrong with skipping a run. For my first half I beat myself up about skipping runs, for my second I didn’t! I didn’t miss many, but if I did I just embraced it and let my body rest!

  8. I feel ya, girl. I think my run today is going to be a swim instead, and it really worries me! I have a feeling that come May 13.1 miles just may not be ok…blah. You have all of the training you need though, especially with all of that soccer!

    • Oh you will do great!! I am a firm believer than if you are active that adrenaline will take you the rest of the way there! I am always amazed by my pace in a race situation because in training I never push on my long runs!

  9. I wouldn’t worry about those 3 miles, you can make them up on another day. If I skip a run I usually double up or at more mileage to my next run to catch up.
