I hope every one had a great memorial day weekend! This was one of my most active to date for sure! On Friday I made it out for a 4.5 mile run, I paced at 8:45 which is a bit slower than I would have cared to but the insane heat that the DC area has been getting recently has been pretty intense for running. I finished off the day on a boat tour roaming around DC which was a blast!
Saturday I hiked Old Rag mountain with a few friends. The views were amazing! The hike was over nine miles and took us 3.5 hours. We started super early though (aka got picked up at 6am) to try and beat some of the hotter weather. The end of the upward hike was a crazy rock scramble that was so fun. I was able to get through all but one spot with out a little help from the boys. I was quite proud of myself!
This was by far the most fun I’ve had working out in a while. We were cruising at an 18 min / mile pace for the upward climb which is pretty impressive, by the time we reached the top it looked as though we had all been hosed down, it was really attractive.
Sunday consisted of me whining about my back for a while and lounging by the pool for the day. I some how managed to throw out / tweak my lower back either wednesday or thursday of last week so I’ve been living off of ib profin and making sweet sweet love to my heating pad. Sitting is not enjoyable so I’ve been doing a good chunk of standing.
Monday was a blast. My pool was packed with people and I had a few friends come over to enjoy the sun and get in some practice for our corn hole match the next day. Corn hole is a game where you throw little sand bags at a board and aim for the hole in the board. Easy enough right? Mixed with a little bit of booze and a team that will most likely start crying if you lose it can actually be quite the little pressure cooker of a situation.
The four of us shared a healthy amount of spiked lemonade beverages and soaked up the sun for a few hours before calling it quits. Last night was the play offs for corn hole and we ended up coming in 2nd and losing by one point. Which was sad but we had a great run this year and ended up beating the reigning champ in the semi finals – small victories. We are planning on doing a summer league too so that will be a time for redemption… and more pool parties.
In work out news for the week:
I have my FIRST half marathon on Saturday!! I’m petrified because I have not been doing any distance runs, basically at all. So I am hoping that adrenaline will push me through. I had to take a week off of running and really everything post mudder because of the blisters I got. Definitely put me behind a little but what are you gunna do? Yesterday was a quick 3 miles over lunch to try to get more comfortable with this heat and running. Today I am doing another track work out with the crew, it will go as follows:
1 mile warm up
Interval of 10/50 (10 rest, 50 work)
Touch down side lunges
Walk over push ups
Oblique leg drop downs
x3
1 lap easy jog
1 lap 70% run
1 lap jog curves run straights (100 meters or 50 meters)
1 lap jog curves run straights (100 meters or 50 meters)
1 lap 70% run
1 lap easy jog
Interval of 10/50 (10 rest, 50 work)
Spider push ups
Half burpee
Grapevine
x3
1 mile cool down
Thursday night I have my final game of soccer for the season, that will double as my only activity for the day. Friday is a rest day and Saturday is going to be a hoot! I’m more excited about Saturday night when I will be sipping margaritas in DC but I’ll pretend I’m super jazzed to go bust out 13 miles in 80 – 90 degree weather. There is really only one option, winning.

Those views are beautiful! Did you make one your new screen saver? I had an active weekend as well and I loved it. It is hard to be back at work and back indoors. Best of luck with your race thsi weekend. You will do great! Adrenaline and the crowd will carry you throgh the last few miles and then you will be hooked : )
My screen saver is actually a massive tiger trucking through water… it’s been the same for years, I have a thing for jungle cats ha! I know exactly what you mean! If I could ditch my computer for some more pool and running around I definitely would. And thanks for the encouragement!!
